Monroe Baseball

Our baseball team has had great success over the years due to many talented players and great coaching.  In 1997-98 our team placed third in state competition.  They had another great season in 1999-00.  The boys placed third in state competition again.  The 2000-01 season was another successful season.  The boys went undefeated in the regular season, winning the regional before ending its season in the sectionals.  The 2005-06, the boys again captured the regional championship and placed before ending its season as the runner-up in the sectionals.

   Where Gray Matters

The Monroe Scholastic team competes on the Class A level in I.E.S.A. sanctioned matches. The two teams consists of fifth and sixth /  seventh and eighth graders. The selection process usually occurs in the first two weeks of January. The Scholastic Team begins practice in January, with their first matches in early Febuary. The Scholastic Team competes annually in the Peoria County Scholastic Tournament in late March and begins regional competition in late April. In the last four years, the team has been coached by Kayla Lykins, and the past two years by Jeff Driscoll.

In 1998, the Monroe Scholastic team won the state championship and then followed this outstanding accomplishment with another state championship title in the 1999 season.  The Scholastic Bowl Team became the second team in Monroe history to win back-to-back titles.  To date, the Scholastic Team has placed second, third, and twice fourth in the Peoria County Scholastic tournament.  On four occasions, a Monroe team member was awarded an individual medal for being one in the top five, for toss-up answers.  The Monroe Junior High faculty is directly responsible for our continuing and consistent success over the past decade, by preparing our students for academic competition.  In the last several years, the Monroe Boosters have provided the needed financial supported for uniforms, game questions,  study guides, and a new lockout machine necessary to produce a competitive program.

In 2009 Monroe was once again Regional Champions.

Choral Reading

The junior high students of Monroe began the 2010-2011 Speech season in September.  We had about sixty students sign up to participate in five different categories: monologues, duet acting, small group acting, improvisation and choral reading.

Monroe entered two different competitions.  The Dunlap Invitational was held Wednesday October 27th.  Our students were entered in 22 events receiving 6 first place finishes, 12 second place finishes and 3 third place finish.  The I.E.S.A. Competition was held on Friday, November 12th at Georgetown.  Once again, we had 22 entries.  We received 13 first places finishes, 6 second place finishes, and 3 third place finishes.  Way to go, Monroe!!

The four coaches, Mrs. Fitzanko, Mrs. Lykins, Miss Coons, and Mrs. Winkler, wish to congratulate all who had the courage to participate and worked so hard to memorize their pieces.  We are very proud of the work that our students have done and cannot wait to see what great performances we will be entertained by next year.
